Application

What this model was built to do

An RFID reader exists because a barcode needs a line of sight and a pallet of 60 cartons does not have one. The form factor follows the job: a pistol grip for racking at 8 m, a slim handheld where the operator also scans barcodes, and a Bluetooth puck that turns a phone or tablet the site already owns into a reader for the price of a reader.

Goods-in, put-away and picking — application photograph 01

Goods-in, put-away and picking

Pallet labels, location labels and case labels in the same shift — often the same minute. The operator wears gloves, works at reach-truck height, and cannot walk back to a terminal to correct a mis-scan.

SOFTWARE

WMS mobile client (SAP EWM, Manhattan, Blue Yonder) driven by keyboard wedge, DataWedge intent or the vendor SDK. Ask your ISV which output mode the app expects before the sample ships.

Shelf edge, stockroom and price checks

Associates scan shelf-edge labels and price tags, count stock in a back room with no signal, and take payment at a pop-up counter. The device is picked up and put down hundreds of times a shift.

SOFTWARE

POS or store-ops app on Android, or a Windows store system that has never been rewritten. Both need a scan path that does not fight the on-screen keyboard.

Line-side work orders and machine data

The terminal is bolted where the work happens: work-order scan at the station, torque-tool data over RS232, a photo of the defect attached to the order. Coolant, swarf and vibration are the design constraints.

SOFTWARE

MES client (SAP ME, Siemens Opcenter, local MES), often Windows and often with a fixed IP address and a wired NIC. Confirm whether your MES tolerates a touch-only input method.

Deployment

Where it deploys — use, markets, bands, preparation

UHF Bluetooth reader, 5 m · IP65 — In deployment the regional frequency plan is set in hardware at the factory — the reader that matches the market is the reader that reads.

HOW IT IS USED

  • Dock-door portal: pallet-level check-in/out, 200+ tags per second, WMS updates in real time.
  • Warehouse inventory rounds: handheld sweep of racks — thousands of tags in minutes, no line of sight needed.
  • Retail EAS + cycle count: exits alert on un-paid tags, staff counts shelves during quiet hours.
  • Asset tracking: IT/medical/tool assets tagged and located to room level.

MARKETS & WHY

EU / UK

ETSI EN 302 208 — 865–868 MHz, 4 channels, ≤2 W ERP.

USA / Canada / Mexico

FCC Part 15 — 902–928 MHz, frequency-hopping, up to 4 W EIRP.

Brazil

ANATEL — 902–907.5 / 915–928 MHz; homologation is the importer's duty, we supply the test report.

China

920–925 MHz (and 840–845); the 920–925 plan matches the default SKUs.

India

WPC — 865–867 MHz narrow plan; variant SKU required.

Indonesia / Japan / Korea

923–925 / 916.7–920.9 / 917–920.8 — specify at order so the RF front-end matches.

WATCH-OUTS

  • One SKU per regulatory region — the RF front end is set in hardware. Confirm the deployment country at PO time.
  • Dense-reader environments (multi-portal warehouses) need channel planning; we provide the RF site survey template.
  • Tag choice decides read range more than the reader does: carton-level tags, metal-mount and laundry tags behave very differently.

WHAT TO PREPARE

  • Regulatory region confirmed in writing with the PO (drives the SKU).
  • Reader-dense sites: antenna plan or our site-survey template before install.
  • Middleware endpoint: we push EPC events via LLRP or REST to the WMS.
  • For portals: POE+ or 24 V supply at each door.
  • The worst barcode in the workflow (material, finish, size) — we match the engine, not just the spec sheet.

Bands listed are the default SKUs for each market — final frequency/certification confirmation against the local operator is part of the quotation.

Software fit

What your application needs from the hardware

Read this against your own client before the sample ships — it is the list that decides whether the device works on day one or on the third firmware build.

Tag population
UHF EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-6C. Confirm the tag type and the read distance your process assumes, not the datasheet maximum.
Read mode
Continuous inventory, single-trigger or GPIO-triggered. The middleware usually decides; the reader has to support it.
Middleware
Fixed readers run edge middleware; handhelds push to the WMS over Wi-Fi or stage locally when out of coverage.
Interference
Metal racking and liquids cut read range. Ask for a site test before committing a fleet to one antenna type.

Questions about the BR-A5

Before you order

Stock, configuration, software compatibility and what happens when a unit fails. The answer comes from the person who configured it.

All questions
01Who is behind this site?
Bastion Rugged is the trading front of Bright Alliance Tech Limited, Shenzhen. We design and build rugged mobile hardware — barcode scanning, UHF RFID, NFC, biometric capture — and we sell it to system integrators and solution providers rather than to consumers. The tooling, PCB and antenna work happen with our own engineering team, not through a trading desk.
02Can you supply five units for a pilot?
Yes. A pilot is the normal entry point. We quote single units at sample pricing and support the pilot with spare parts on the same order — a spare battery and a cradle, not a pallet.
03Do the Android units ship with GMS?
Most Android models ship with GMS. For builds where Google services must be absent, we supply a GMS-free firmware on the same hardware — say so at the quotation stage, because it is a firmware decision, not a setting.
04What warranty do you give?
One year as standard, covering the unit and the battery against manufacturing faults. Extended cover and advance-replacement terms are available for fleets — ask for them with the quotation, not after the first failure.
